Weekly Update for May 31st-June 4th, 2021

Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Friday!  I hope you all had a wonderful week!  Next week is a busy week for us, beginning on Monday, May 31st we are out of school for the observance of Memorial Day.  Students will return to school on Tuesday, June 1st for our field day which we call Gator Games. Students will need to apply sunscreen before school and make certain they wear tennis shoes so they can have safe footwear for our fun and games. Students will get wet so I encourage each student to bring an extra change of clothes in a grocery bag with their name on it so they can change after and be comfortable for the rest of the day. I also encourage students to bring a water bottle with their name on it and a towel to dry off with!

Don't forget, our Gator Games theme is the Olympics and our country that we are representing is Norway. If students would like to make a shirt at home to represent our country, that would be great!

Friday, our school will be having our 5th grade promotion drive through parade. Our class will make posters next week and cheer on our 5th graders as they leave LCEU and embark on their new adventures of middle school.  As I stated earlier, Busy week!  Have a great weekend!

Sincerely

Mrs. Dina Knight

Weekly Update for May 24th-28th, 2021

 Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Friday!  We successfully finished SC Ready this week and I don't know whose happier, me or the students 😄 I am so proud of how they tackeled each day with grit and worked so very hard.  With that behind us, we only have 14 more days of school.   I am already trying to prepare myself for the goodbyes that will be coming in a few short days. I am going to miss these kiddos so much, they bring me so much joy and hope.

Looking ahead Monday, May 31st will be a school holiday in obervence of Memorial Day.  That following Tuesday, June the 1st will be our annual Gator Games, aka Field Day.  We are having an Olympic theme and our country to represent is Norway. I am including a picture of their flag, so that if students want to, they can make shirts at home that look like that country's flag. This is optional, but we thought it would be fun.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely
Mrs. Dina Knight

 Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Friday!  I am so glad to be back with the students in the classroom today.  We are celebrating college colors day at our school today and I wanted to share the picture above to show off some colleges that were represented in class today.

Looking ahead to next week, our district recently sent out a communication informing our parents that next Thursday the 25h and Friday the 26th will be asynchronous learning days.  Asynchronous learning means I will not be online with the students but they will be learning and working independently at home virtually  on a Google Slide pathway for each day.  Students will access the pathway at 9 a.m. each day and work at their own pace. Weekly Update for March 8th-12th, 2021

 Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Friday!  We had a great week in room C115 and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful sunshine this week. Thank you to those who sent in supplies this week for our edible soil activity.  You will see from the pictures, that the student's most definitely enjoyed the yummy treat and it was a great review tool for our unit on soil.

I want to brag on the students for a moment, if you dont mind.  A few weeks back I met with students individually as we discussed their MAP testing scores from December and we set goals to reach for in the spring.  Each student listed strategies they intended to use to reach those goals, and this week each one of them worked diligently to pave the way to make their goals. I am so proud of them and they hard work they put forth this week. They are AMAZING! (We will take Spring MAP on April 19th and 20th.)

Looking ahead to next week, we will begin a new math unit on fractions, and a new social studies unit on different cultures around the world.  In reading, we will also begin a new unit on problem and solution text structures.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Don't forget next Friday, March 12th is a school holiday!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Dina Knight

Weekly Update for March 1st-5th, 2021

Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Friday!  This week our school raised money for the American Heart Association by sending in a dollar to wear a hat today.  I know I am biased, but I think we have the cutest kiddos in their hats!

Today marks the half way mark for the 3rd nine weeks. Parents, please check your students grades in powerschool. This quarter proves to be challenging for our students, so reivewing material at home will ensure success for your student. Weekly Update for February 22nd-26th, 2021

 Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Friday!  Everyone is C115 is completely water logged and tired of indoor recess. I am crossing my fingers hard that the weather forcast stays as it is projected right now, we need some outdoor time!  It's hard to believe that next week will bring the month of February to an end, time is truly flying.  March has a few important dates that I wanted to give you in advance. March 12th is a student holiday, March 18th is Spring picture day and the end of the 3rd 9 weeks is March 31st.

Looking ahead to our curriculum next week, we will finish up chapter 9 in math on multiplying multiples of 10 with a test on Wednesday.  In ELA we will begin looking at a author's purpose for writing a text and in science we will continue to keep digging in soil.  Surpisingly our soil experiements did not get too mess this week, we will conduct an experiment next week with water and soil and that may have a different outcome!

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Update for February 15th-19th, 2021

 Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Friday!  Even though it is a dreary, rainy Friday, our class had an awesome Friday.  We wrapped up Chapter 8 in math, which included adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers. A few students still seem to struggle, I will be working with them one on one in class, but help at home would be great as well. There are problems in their math workbook they can go back and re-work. Your suppport is greatly appreciated!  We will be moving onto multiplying by 10 in chapter 9.  We are also moving onto to a new unit in science with soil. Students love this unit, we observe and do a few experiements with dirt, so I apologize if your students clothes come home a tad dirtier than when you sent them.

Have a great weekend, I look forward to another great week here at LCEU!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Dina Knight

Weekly Update for February 5th-9th, 2021

Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Friday!  I hope you all had a wonderful week. Despite the cold temps and rain, AND indoor recess (4 straight days, but whose counting?)  the class and I had a wonderful, productive week.  Throughout the week, I worked with students in small groups to strenghten their addind and subtracting 3 digit numbers, and we are making awesome progress.  If you would like to help from home as well, their are practice problems in their math workbooks that you can have them work out on notebook paper or on the whiteboards that I dropped of at the beginning of the year.

The Bookfair began this week!  It is virtual again, and here is the link if you are interested in purchasing books for your student https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/cptoolkit/homepage.do?method=homepage&url=lakecarolinaupper1

Weekly Update for January 25th-29th, 2020

Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Friday!  The students and I were estatic to be back in the classroom, and they worked so hard this week. We are right on track with our pacing  which is pretty amazing considering the extinutating circumstances we are in.  The 26th is the last day of this 9 week quarter. Hard 2 believe that we are down 2 quarters with 2 more to go.

In math, we are beginning to add 2 and 3 digit numbers. I noticed that students did struggle with this so any additional help you can give your student at home would help tremendously. I am helping additionally as well, working with students in small groups to correct their errors and help with understanding.

Monday, January 25th is a teacher workday so there will be no school. School will resume Tuesday, the 26th.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Dina Knight

Weekly Update for January 11th-15th, 2021

 Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Friday!  I hope you all are healthy and dry!  The students and I transitioned nicely from Winter Break to virtual learning. I was so very happy to see the kiddos' smiling faces and hear their precious voices. I am looking forward to returning to face to face instruction on Tuesday, January 19th.  While we are virtual, parents could you please help me encourage your student to be present while online with me, making sure he/she has on their headphones if they prefer to wear them and also emphasize the importance of turning in assignments on time and taking their time to complete them. The end of the 9 weeks is January 26th and I do not want your students grades to begin to slip this late in the grading period.  I appreciate your support in advance.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I will see your students Monday morning online at 9a.m. However, they are to login to Google Classroom at 8:30 to complete their morning math work independently.
